Ever been interested in how our brain functions and the chemicals in play that cause us to conduct ourselves and carry out certain behaviours? But at the same time found the theory and endless research overwhelming and confusing?
I have now been studying a Bachelor of psychology for the last 5 years and I have to admit that I have at times been flooded with research and theory that completely surpasses my intake levels.
However, waiting to board a flight to another cricketing venue, I came across David Gillespie’s “Brain Reset”. Sceptical at first, thinking that it would just be another book with endless studies and advancements that leave you more confusing, I took the chance in the hope that maybe something would make sense.
Throughout the book he speaks of the cycles in which humans find themselves in, but also then how to break those cycles of anxiety, depression, stress and addiction in the hope to restore mental calmness and stability. Now you are probably thinking, “that stills sounds like a lot of information to process” and yes you are right, however with the way it is written it allows the reader to comprehend the information on a more human level.
His book is split into three sections:
The devils in the dopamine: The science behind the reward/punishment pathway
A vicious cycle: How addiction and uncertainty feed anxiety and depression
How to reset our brain: science based strategies for overcoming addiction and stress.
If books around self help and how the brain functions is something that excites/resonates with you, then I definitely recommend David Gillespie’s book. However if you don’t have the time or are still sceptical, then see below my highlighted sections from the book.
